Texas Hold’em – This poker game has come a long way in the past decade and is definitely the choice of most poker players, as it is the most popular poker game across the western world. Texas Hold’em is a game of two hole (personal) cards and the use of five community cards. Each player attempts to make the best five card hand out of the seven cards.
Omaha – is a similar game to Texas Hold’em, in which players are dealt hole cards and share the five community cards with the rest of the players at the table. The difference is that each player is dealt four cards and players are required to use two and only two cards from their hand and three cards from the five community cards to make the best possible five card hand.
Omaha hi lo – is also known as ‘Omaha eight or better’ played out exactly like ‘Omaha’ except that there is a chance for the pot to have two winning hands. The best high card hand will win half the pot and the best low hand that is eight-high or lower will qualify for the other half of the pot. A player has the ability to win both the high hand and the low hand with his four hole cards and when this happens it is called a scooped pot.
Seven-Card Stud – was previously the game of choice among poker players until the rise of Texas Hold’em in the 2000’s. This game is not as easily learned as Texas Hold’em, but none the less it is a fantastic poker game that is still enjoyed by all types of poker players. A few things to know about Seven Card Stud is that the betting is always clockwise and this is how a hand is dealt:
Two cards are given to each player face down and one card face up. Then three more face up cards, with a betting round in between and on the seventh street/river another card is dealt face down followed by another betting round and then showdown.
Seven Card Stud hi/lo – Just like Omaha hi/lo, Seven Card Stud also has a hi/lo variant where the pot may be split into two winning hands. If a player makes the best low hand that qualifies for the 8 low or better, he will win half the pot. The high hand will win the remaining half of the pot.
Five-Card Draw – This is a type of game that most people tend to play in a house game with multiple variants to the game. It is very rare to find this game in a casino or even tournaments. The game is quite simple: players are dealt five face-down cards after blinds and ante’s. The person to the left of the dealer has the option to bet, and the second round begins with the player who opened the first round of betting. After the round of betting, players have the option of drawing and discarding up to three cards. After this there is another round of betting and then showdown.
